Grass and jute-based insulation

Gramitherm Grass Insulation improves energy efficiency, leading to lower heating and cooling costs, and enhanced indoor comfort because if its high levels of breathability. It also has impressive acoustic properties.

Ecological Building Systems will introduce Gramitherm grass fibre insulation at this year’s Architecture & Building Expo. This is a high-performing, eco-friendly solution made primarily from non-agricultural, publicly -sourced grass cuttings and recycled jute fibres. With a bio-based mass of 92%, it significantly lowers environmental impact and supports the circular economy.

Recycled polyester binding fibres, also sourced within 300km of the manufacturer, minimise transportation emissions and further enhance its low-carbon footprint. Additionally, the production process uses biogas-generated heat from grass fermentation, showcasing a sustainable manufacturing cycle.

Thanks to its high density of 40kg/m3, and grass’s unique fibrous nature, Gramitherm Grass Insulation provides a combination of flexibility and rigidity for a snug fit, without the risk of settlement. It can be installed between rafters, joists, stud walls, ceilings, and suspended timber floors. The insulation has a thermal conductivity of 0.041 W/mK combined with a high heat storage capacity, which effectively reduces heat transfer, and helps to keep buildings warm in winter and cool in summer. This improves energy efficiency, leading to lower heating and cooling costs, and enhanced indoor comfort.

Gramitherm offers high levels of breathability with an exceptionally low vapour resistance, combined with the hygroscopic properties of grass and jute fibres which regulate humidity, helping prevent moisture build up and mould formation. Gramitherm Grass Insulation also has impressive acoustic properties, and can absorb 99% of sounds at 1000 Hertz, which significantly reduces noise transmission within the building.
