Direct Access, provider of access certificates and universal design consultancy in association with architects and design teams, has unveiled an innovative tactile map for bus dstations.
Disability consultancy Direct Access of St Kevins, Dublin, announced the installation of the first of its new tactile map range at Cardiff Bus Station for Transport for Wales this week. It marks a significant step towards enhancing accessibility for all passengers. This innovative map is designed to assist visually-impaired individuals in navigating the bus station with greater ease and independence.
The tactile map features raised elements and Braille descriptions, providing a detailed layout of the station, including bus bays, ticket counters, restrooms and other key facilities. By offering a tactile representation of the environment, it empowers users to plan their routes and locate services without relying solely on visual cues. QR codes provide audio description and sign language functionality. These enable blind people who cannot access Braille or deaf people who use sign language, to also access the same information.
This initiative underscores Direct Access’s commitment to creating inclusive public spaces. The map is part of a broader effort to improve accessibility across transportation hubs, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can travel confidently and comfortably.
Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the map’s clarity and usefulness. Direct Access continues to work closely with local authorities and disability advocacy groups to refine and expand these accessibility solutions.
